Battery Testing
Our service experts are on hand to test your battery to ensure that it is carrying a full charge. We use the most advanced diagnostic equipment available and can quickly determine if you are due for a battery replacement. If you'd like to test your battery at your Lumsden-area home, you can try one of the following methods.
Headlight Test:Â
- Start your car, put it in park, and turn on the headlights.Â
- Rev the engine to see if the brightness of your headlights changes.
- If you detect fluctuations in the level of brightness, it indicates that the battery current isn't strong enough when idling, and you should bring your car into our Service Centre as soon as possible for further assessment.
Voltmeter:
You can purchase a voltmeter or digital multimeter at most Moose Jaw-area auto parts stores, including the Parts Centre at Capital GMC Buick. Here are the steps for battery testing with a voltmeter or digital multimeter:
- Open the hood of your car, and set the voltmeter to 20 DC volts. Then, touch the negative meter probe (black) to the battery's negative terminal (also black)
- Repeat this step by touching the positive meter probe (red) to the positive terminal (also red).
- Have someone turn on your vehicle's headlights, and check the voltmeter reading.
- 12.5 volts or higher indicates a full charge; 12.3 volts indicates a 75% charge; 11.8 volts or lower indicates a 25% or less charge.
How Often to Service Your Car Battery
We recommend that you regularly inspect your battery to ensure that it is securely fastened and the terminals are clean and free of corrosion. When you bring your car, truck, or SUV in for routine scheduled maintenance, our service technicians will inspect and service your battery as part of our standard maintenance inspection. That being said, you should consult your owner's manual for the guidelines regarding your specific vehicle.Â
