How to Do a Tire Rotation Yourself

Row of tires
Whether you choose to rotate your tires at home or take your car, SUV, or truck to the Service Centre at Capital GMC Buick in Regina, regular tire rotation will help you get the most out of your tires. Follow our guide on how to do a tire rotation to keep your tires rolling for as long as possible.

Why is Tire Rotation Important for Your Vehicle?

The tread on your tires wears down over time, with the outside edges of the front tires showing greater wear while the rear tires tend to wear more evenly. If you do not rotate your tires, they will wear down at different rates and you will have to replace them sooner. Tire rotation also ensures that you get optimal traction in all kinds of weather and road conditions in the White City area.

How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

If your vehicle is equipped with front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, your tires should be rotated every 8,000 to 13,000 kilometres. All-wheel drive vehicles require more frequent changes at every 4,000 to 8,000 kilometres since all tires are actively engaged and that results in faster wear. As with any vehicle service, we always recommend checking your owner’s manual for more specific recommendations.

Learn More About the Importance of Tire Position

  • FWD Tires: Move the front tires to the back in the same left/right positions. When moving the rear tires to the front, you’ll need to switch the position of the right and left tire.
  • RWD Tires: Invert the above process when rotating tires on RWD vehicles. The rear tires can be moved to the front of the car in the same left/right positions, but when you move the front tires to the rear, you need to switch the left and right tire.

How to Rotate Tires at Home

To rotate your tires at your Southey or Emerald Park area home, you will need a car jack, lug nut wrench, and a set of car jack stands. Once you have acquired the necessary tools and equipment, follow these steps:

  1. Engage your parking brake for safety.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels, but don’t take them all the way off. This will make unscrewing them when the tire is elevated much easier.
  3. Lift up one wheel with a car jack and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Repeat step 3 until all tires are off the ground.
  5. Remove the tires one by one.
  6. Take this time to make sure your tires are filled to the optimal tire pressure. Once filled, you can rotate them according to the appropriate pattern for your type of vehicle. Place the tire back onto the wheel mount and tighten the lug nuts by hand.
  7. Lower the car from the jack stands and use the lug wrench to finish tightening the nuts. It’s best to work the lug nuts diagonally from one to another in a star pattern to ensure even tightening. If the lug nuts aren’t tightened properly it can cause the brake rotor to warp.
